Wildwood Park — formally Wildwood Lake Sanctuary — is a 224-acre urban nature preserve 3 miles from Inn of the Dove in Harrisburg. It is one of the closest natural areas to the hotel and one of the most underrated. A natural lake, cattail marshes, upland forest, meadow, and miles of quiet trails all within the city limits — free to enter, open year-round, and completely unhurried.
For couples based at Inn of the Dove, Wildwood Park is an ideal morning before checkout, a peaceful afternoon when the calendar is light, or the quiet anchor of a nature-focused stay. This page covers the trails, the birding, the boardwalk, and how the park connects to the broader Capital Area Greenbelt.
What Wildwood Park Has — Trails, Lake, and Wildlife
Wildwood Park is managed by the Wildwood Conservancy and is part of the Capital Area Greenbelt — a 20-mile trail loop that circles Harrisburg and connects several parks, green corridors, and the riverfront. The park itself has four distinct habitat types that make it ecologically diverse and visually varied even on repeat visits.
Wildwood Lake
The centrepiece of the sanctuary — a natural lake surrounded by cattail marsh and wooded shoreline. The lake is visible from multiple points on the trail loop and is the primary draw for wading birds and waterfowl. Great blue herons, egrets, and ospreys are regularly seen from the lakeside path and the boardwalk.
Wetland Boardwalk
A boardwalk trail winds through the cattail marsh at water level — the best part of the park for close-up wildlife viewing. The boardwalk puts you directly over the wetland, with turtles basking on logs, herons standing in the shallows, and red-winged blackbirds calling from the reeds. Flat and easy — takes about 20 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Bird Watching — 200+ Species
Wildwood Park is one of the premier urban birding sites in central Pennsylvania. Over 200 species have been documented in the sanctuary. Spring migration (April–May) brings the greatest variety — warblers, shorebirds, and raptors pass through. Bald eagles and waterfowl are present through winter. Bring binoculars; the marsh edges are productive at any season.
Forest & Meadow Trails
Beyond the lake and marsh, Wildwood Park has upland forest paths and old-field meadow trails that complete the loop. The forest section is shaded and cool even in summer, with deer frequently seen in the early morning. The meadow section is best in late summer when wildflowers are in bloom. The full loop is 2 to 3 miles depending on route.
Capital Area Greenbelt
The 20-mile Greenbelt trail passes through Wildwood Park and can be followed north or south for longer excursions. Walking or cycling south from the park leads toward Riverfront Park and City Island — about 3 miles along the Greenbelt. The trail is mostly paved or packed surface and well-marked throughout.
Environmental Education Center
The Wildwood Conservancy’s Environmental Education Center is located at the park entrance on Wildwood Way. It has natural history exhibits, trail maps, and seasonal programming. Hours are limited — check the Wildwood Conservancy website before visiting if you want to go inside — but the trails and boardwalk are accessible independently during daylight hours.
Getting there: From Inn of the Dove, take Linglestown Road west toward Front Street, then north to Wildwood Way — about 3 miles, 8 minutes. Parking is free in the main lot at 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg PA 17110. The trailhead is directly from the parking area. No reservations needed.

How a Wildwood Park Morning Looks
Early Morning — Trail Start
Arrive at Wildwood Park just after dawn for the best birding. The lake is still and the marsh is active in the first hour of daylight — herons feeding in the shallows, turtles emerging, songbirds calling from the reeds. The parking lot at 100 Wildwood Way opens at dawn. No crowds at this hour.
The Boardwalk Loop
Walk the boardwalk through the cattail marsh first — it’s at its best in morning light. Then follow the lakeside trail north toward the forest section. The full loop back to the parking area takes about 60 to 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, or longer if you stop frequently to watch birds or simply sit at the lake edge.
Optional Extension — Capital Area Greenbelt
If you have more time, pick up the Greenbelt trail from the park. Following it south leads toward Italian Lake and eventually the Harrisburg riverfront — a flat, paved path that passes through some of the city’s nicest green corridors. Turn back whenever you like; there is no fixed route or time commitment.
Late Morning — Downtown Harrisburg
Wildwood Park is 10 minutes from downtown Harrisburg and Midtown’s dining strip on North 3rd Street. After a few hours in the park, coffee and breakfast at one of the independent cafes in Midtown rounds out the morning nicely before returning to the suite.
Back at the Suite
Inn of the Dove is 8 minutes from the park. Hot tub, fireplace, the rest of the afternoon entirely private. Checkout is 11:00 a.m. but a morning walk to the park before checkout is one of the easiest ways to end a stay here — 8 minutes there, 8 minutes back, and the suite is the last thing you leave.
