What Hersheypark Is — And What Makes It Worth a Full Day
Hersheypark opened in 1906 as a leisure park for Milton Hershey’s chocolate factory workers and has grown into one of the premier regional theme parks on the East Coast. It sits on over 110 acres in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and operates more than 70 rides, including some of the most intense steel coasters in the mid-Atlantic.
Unlike many theme parks that have been diluted over time, Hersheypark continues to invest seriously in its coaster lineup. The park is known among enthusiasts for the quality and diversity of its rides — and for couples who enjoy thrill rides, a full day here rarely feels like enough time to do everything.
The Coasters Worth Your Time
Candymonium is the park’s newest and largest coaster — 210 feet tall, 80 mph at its fastest, with over a mile of track and a sustained run of airtime hills that keeps the intensity up through the entire ride. It’s the best coaster in the park and one of the top hyper-coasters on the East Coast.
Skyrush remains the most intense coaster at Hersheypark for many riders — a wing-seat layout that leaves the legs completely exposed, producing relentless airtime over a series of sharp hills. It’s not for everyone, but it’s genuinely exceptional if you enjoy that style of ride.
Storm Runner is a hydraulic launch coaster that accelerates from 0 to 72 mph in under 2 seconds before climbing a 180-foot top-hat element. The launch is visceral and the inversions are well-placed. Fahrenheit features a 97-degree beyond-vertical drop — steeper than straight down — and a tightly packed set of inversions. Great Bear is an inverted coaster (feet-dangling) that sweeps over the Swatara Creek and delivers a smooth, classic ride that holds up well even as newer coasters have been added around it.
SoakyCity Water Park
SoakyCity is Hersheypark’s water park, included with park admission during its open season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). It has over 20 water attractions including several multi-person raft slides, a lazy river, wave pool, and body slides. On hot summer weekends, it gets crowded by midday — arriving by 10 a.m. gives you an hour or two before the queues build. The 17-minute drive from Inn of the Dove means you can leave early if you want to beat the crowds.
Seasonal Events
Hersheypark in the Dark runs through September and October — a Halloween event with haunted houses, scare zones, and select rides operating after dark. Admission includes access to the haunted attractions. It runs on select nights, so check the park calendar before planning around it.
Hersheypark Christmas Candylane opens in mid-November and runs through December. The park fills with holiday lighting, seasonal shows, and a subset of indoor rides and flat rides remain operational throughout. It’s a genuinely atmospheric event — less crowded than summer and surprisingly enjoyable for adults who are not interested in traditional holiday events but appreciate a well-done seasonal setup.
Planning Note: Hersheypark tickets are time-entry and should be purchased in advance online. Same-day tickets at the gate cost more and can sell out on peak summer weekends. Your Hersheypark admission ticket includes same-day re-entry, which means you can leave mid-afternoon, return to the hotel to rest, and go back for the evening.
Why Coming Back to Inn of the Dove Makes the Day Better
A full day at Hersheypark is enjoyable and exhausting in equal measure. The park does not have a great nearby option for couples who want actual quiet at the end of it. The Hershey Lodge and Hotel Hershey are family properties — large, busy, and priced for the resort experience rather than the private getaway. Hampton Inn and Fairfield Inn near the park entrance are standard chain hotels with nothing distinctive.
Inn of the Dove is 17 minutes from the park entrance and is built around the opposite experience: a small adults-only property where the corridors stay genuinely quiet, every suite has a private jetted hot tub, and no children are permitted on the grounds at any time. After 8 or 10 hours at a theme park, that contrast is real.
The Suite You Come Back To
Every suite at Inn of the Dove includes a private jetted hot tub. Two suites feature private heated indoor pools. Most have a wood-burning or gas fireplace. For a Hersheypark day in summer, the pool suites are the most requested — the ability to soak in a private indoor pool after a long day in the heat is a different thing entirely from sharing a hotel pool with other guests.

How a Hersheypark Day Typically Works
Here is the practical version — how most couples plan a Hersheypark day around a stay at Inn of the Dove:
3:00 PM (Day Before) — Check In
Standard check-in is 3:00 p.m. The night before a park day is the most popular pattern — arrive, settle in, use the hot tub in the evening, and wake up rested for an early park opening. Free private parking at the hotel throughout your stay.
9:00–9:30 AM — Drive to Hersheypark
The drive takes 17 minutes. Hersheypark opens at 10:00 a.m. most days in season. Arrive by opening time — the first 90 minutes are the best window for the most popular coasters (Candymonium, Skyrush, Storm Runner) before lines build. Parking at the park is paid separately.
10:00 AM–2:00 PM — Peak Ride Time
Get the major coasters done before early afternoon. Hit Candymonium and Skyrush first while wait times are under 20 minutes. Storm Runner, Fahrenheit, and Great Bear can follow. SoakyCity is best mid-morning before the pools fill. Walk-on access to most rides is possible before 11 a.m.
2:00–4:00 PM — Optional Hotel Break
Your Hersheypark admission includes same-day re-entry. Many couples drive back to the hotel in the early afternoon, use the hot tub, rest for a couple of hours, then return for the evening. It’s a 17-minute drive each way and the break makes the second half of the day significantly better.
4:00–8:00 PM — Evening at the Park
Late afternoon sees wait times drop as families with young children leave. This is the best window to re-ride favorites and explore the park at a relaxed pace. Evening fireworks run on select summer nights — check the park’s entertainment schedule when planning.
8:00–9:00 PM — Return to the Suite
The hotel front desk is open until 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. The hot tub has no closing time. Check-out is 11:00 a.m. the following morning; late checkout is available on request, subject to availability.
Romance Packages — Add Something Special
If you’re pairing a Hersheypark visit with an anniversary, birthday, or any occasion worth marking, Inn of the Dove offers in-suite romance packages set up before your arrival. If you’re already checked in and want to add something tonight, call the front desk at 717-540-5540 and we’ll do what we can.
All packages are added by calling 717-540-5540 or noting your preference during online booking. Bathrobes are also available as an add-on at $19.99 per pair. See all options on the Packages page.
